Oleon offers a wide range of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) going from an ISO VG 15 viscosity up to ISO VG 1000. Being a company of which GREEN is one of the key-assets, Oleon is and always has been a market leader for Ecolabel registered ester base oils. As we speak, more than 25 Radialube products are on the LuSC list for Ecolabel registered raw materials. Taking into account the chemistry of esters, as well as the raw materials Oleon uses, at least 80% of the lubricant base oils that Oleon offers is eligible for Ecolabel registration.

Looking to marine lubricants (excluding the engine oils), a major market shift occured on 19 December 2013. Since that day, all commercial vessels larger than 79 feet that want to enter in 'waters of the United States' are submissive to the established regulation of the Vessel General Permit (VGP) for Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants, defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The targeted lubricants, which are used in an oil-sea interface, are amongst others:

  • Controllable pitch propeller and thruster hydraulic fluid
  • Stern tube oils
  • Paddle wheel propulsion
  • Thruster bearings

Apart from those applications, EPA strongly encourages the use of EAL for all above-deck equipment such as: hydraulic oil, gear oil, 2-stroke oil, etc. 

The shift to EAL happens gradually over the years, because, apart from being effective immediately for new vessels, existing vessels need to comply only at their next scheduled dry-dock maintenance. Environmentally Accetaple Lubricants need to fulfill the following requirements:

  1. biodegradable 
  2. minimally toxic
  3. not-bioaccumulative

To proof these requirements, extensive testing is required. This testing however can be avoided by using base oils (> 75% for greases and > 90% for others) which are compliant with an approved international Ecolabelling scheme, such as Ecolabel. 

Specifically for VGP EAL, Oleon offers a wide range of globally and Ecolabel registered products, going from ISO VG 15 up to ISO VG 1000. Depending on your requirements, this product range is divided in a standard range and a top-tier range, in which the difference is mainly linked to the oxidation stability
