The USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines EAL’s as lubricants that fulfill specific requirements:

✔ Biodegradable (ex.: ≤ 60%, OECD 301B)

✔ Minimally toxic (ex.: OECD 201)

✔ Non- bioaccumulative (ex. OECD 117)

 

EAL’s are commonly classified according to the type of base oil used in their formulation. Oleon’s natural chemistry enables us to offer a broad range of ester base oils and additives well-adapted to these criteria and especially suited for formulation of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants and Bio-lubricants (min. 25% renewable content). Complying to the above requirements however, calls for extensive testing. This comprehensive testing can (partly) be avoided by using base oils and additives which are compliant with approved national or international labels, such as EU Ecolabel, German Blue Angel, Swedish Standard, OSPAR, etc…

The choice of fatty acids in the design of the ester impacts the performance on various critical parameters. The number of fatty ester possibilities is unlimited, so are the combinations of functions they can perform.

To support our customers in formulating against these criteria and to avoid this substantial testing, Oleon has registered over 40 products on the 2019 Lubricant Substance Classification list (LuSC) for EU Ecolabel formulations.
