Life Cycle Analysis: at the heart of our Continuous Improvement objectives

We could say that Life Cycle Analysis is truly bringing a new dynamic to Oleon’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy.

Life Cycle analysis (LCA) is a method of determining the total environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle: extraction of the required raw materials, production, transport, use and waste processing.

LCA is at the heart of our Continuous Improvement objectives to strengthen our ambition in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillar “our products & services". After a phase of external studies and internal trainings during these last few years, we have set ourselves the goal of being autonomous on this activity in order to achieve our ambitions and to meet customers’ needs.

The benefits of a LCA approach are multiple:

- Allow comparison of our impacts on the environment:

  • Oleon’s green products versus petrochemical based products
  • Raw materials coming from different supliers
  • Different process technologies (e.g. chemical vs enzymatic)

- Enable management of our product portfolio according to sustainability criteria:

  • Raw materials: sustainable palm policy, suppliers code of conduct, ECOVADIS supplier assessment
  • Production processes: HSE policy, energy policy ...

- Enable industrial decisions such as investments for new equipments and new technologies.

- Communicate environmental performances of our products.
  In this respect, LCA results can be included in the ecolabels.

Where exactly is Oleon on this trajectory? So far, we have reached autonomy for LCA studies. We have updated our software and main database and we have exchanged data with external parties. For the moment, LCA and updates for several of our products are ongoing. We also want to integrate LCA in our R&D projects.
