Oleon launches pilot project with low-carbon steel drums
Ertvelde, April 30th 2026 – Oleon, a leading company in sustainable chemistry, received the first delivery of low-carbon steel drums at its production site in Ertvelde. The initiative marks the start of a pilot project aimed at significantly reducing the carbon footprint of industrial packaging, developed in collaboration with packaging partner Greif.
The drums are produced from steel manufactured through innovative processes that generate significantly lower CO₂ emissions than conventional steel production. Compared to traditional steelmaking, emissions can be reduced by around 60%, depending on the production method.
Through this initiative, Oleon aims to reduce the environmental impact of its packaging while supporting customers in lowering their Scope 3 emissions.
“At Oleon, we continuously look for ways to further improve the sustainability of our value chain,” says Jasper Vandenbogaerde, Corporate Category Manager Packaging. “With these low-carbon steel drums, we are taking a concrete step to reduce the CO₂ impact of our packaging without compromising on quality or safety. We are honored that Greif has chosen Oleon as a partner for this pilot project.”
The collaboration with Greif is key to making this innovation possible. The introduction of low-carbon steel drums represents a pilot initiative for both companies.
“At Oleon, we continuously look for ways to further improve the sustainability of our value chain.”
The new drums offer the same performance, safety, and reliability as conventional steel drums and can be integrated seamlessly into existing production and logistics processes.
Through this project, Oleon and Greif demonstrate how collaboration across the value chain can drive tangible solutions to reduce the climate impact of industrial packaging.
